En Junio de 1966 se empezó a fraguar lo que después culminaría en la creación de ABBA, ya que fue en esa fecha cuando Björn Ulvaeus y Benny Andersson empezaron a trabajar juntos. Sin embargo, no sería hasta 1969 cuando conocieron a las otras dos componentes y vocalistas, Agnetha Fälkstog que había conocido a Björn en las giras de éste con su anterior grupo, Hootenanny Singers y Anni-Frid Lyngstad, que además se convirtieron en sus respectivas parejas.
Sin duda, una de sus canciones más exitosas y aún conocidas hoy día es Mamma Mia (Que da nombre al musical que está basado en las canciones de este grupo), aparecida poco después, en 1975, que llegó a ser Número 1 en Australia y Reino Unido.
